BOUNTIFUL BASKET

First schools in north Northumberland have been invited to take part in an artistic display of fruit and vegetables in a basket.

The Bountiful Basket show will feature all the participating schools' displays and is aimed at encouraging youngsters to think about healthy eating. It will also tie in with the Government’s five-a-day message urging everyone to eat a minimum of five pieces of fruit and veg a day.

In previous years, this part of the Alnwick Food Festival has been run as a cake-decorating competition. Children were asked to design a cake with at least one piece of fruit on it. Each school selected one cake design to make up and enter into the competition.

Last year, Lowick and Holy Island First School scooped first prize with its mouthwatering hedgehog cake.

In 2005, Belford First School walked away with first prize for their entry which included apples, strawberries, kiwis and grapes; St Michael's First School, Alnwick, was second, and third was a joint entry from Lowick and Holy Island First Schools.
