Town Hall history
In 1585, the west side of the Market Place housed a brewhouse with a narrow passageway through it connecting to Fenkle Street. It was taken over by the Town Corporation and rebuilt as a tollbooth, a venue for meetings and a guard house. In 1736, the Corporation rebuilt the tollbooth again to form a fittingly grandiose Town Hall. The refurbishment cost £730. It was also used as a court, weigh house, guard house and for shops.
