Community Market - Sunday 25th September in Bondgate Within

Another innovation for the 2011 Alnwick Food Festival will be the Sunday Community Market - a platform for local voluntary and community groups to show off their wares.

This year’s Community Market programme is spearheaded by Alnwick Area Friends of the Earth who will host a day of talks and demonstrations:

Sustainable Food Culture

Experts from Newcastle University will be asking how to create a sustainable food culture in the UK.

Professor of Carlo Leifert will be considering whether it will be possible for the UK to feed itself sustainably, whilst Sharron Kuznesof will discuss how likely UK foodies are to accept the changes they'll need to make. Finally Jan Deckers will consider whether vegetarianism or even veganism is the most appropriate response to climate change and  rising food prices.

Professor ecological agriculture Carlo Leifert will be considering whether it will be possible for the UK to feed itself sustainably. Food marketing lecturer Sharron Kuznesof will ask whether UK foodies are ready to accept the changes they'll need to make. Medical ethics lecturer Jan Deckers will consider whether vegetarianism or even veganism is the most appropriate response to climate change and rising food prices.

 Bread & Ale

It's not all theory... throughout the day, Rachael Roberts will lead a hand-on chance to make your own bread from scratch and learn a little about the mysterious processes which go into making the perfect loaf – all on a strictly ‘knead to know’ basis.

Local FOE members Bill Grisdale and Sue Patience will be giving a tour through beer- and wine-making on a budget, both using kits and raw ingredients, several of which can be foraged for free in Northumberland.

“Alnwick Area Friends of the Earth have had a presence at the Food Festival for several years,” says David Farrar.  “This year were are pleased to be doing something different. Our programme of talks hopes to challenge the thinking around food and should generate lively debate. Alongside this, our practical demonstrations aim to show how you can create more of what you eat and drink for yourself. Underpinning all of this will be an overarching theme of striving for food that is local, sustainable and seasonal.”

Other  exhibitors at the Community Market include the Alnwick Community Centre, the Aln Valley Railway, the Bailiffgate Museum and Sustain.

Alnwick’s Gallery Youth Project will be assisting with the Smoothie bike stand and hosting inter-active graffiti art sessions led by artist, John Craggs.

The Community Market, located in Bondgate Within, has been generously sponsored by Wilkinson who have recently opened a new shop on Lagny Street.

Store manager, Lee Wade, said: “Opening a brand new store and joining the local community in Alnwick is an exciting prospect for Wilkinsons. There is a wealth of history and culture in the town, and the gastronomic offering is a significant part of this – with the farmers’ markets and plethora of fantastic restaurants, it really is a foodie hub! We are proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Food Festival”
